Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the right to question specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
