The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
