The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation about The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously flexible, enabling players to experiment both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
