Social Media Content Creators Fueling Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Slimming Drug

A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.

Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Online

The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing effects. Followers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Thriving Trade on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a flourishing trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and assertions of rapid British shipping. Vendors promote the substance there before redirecting customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.

Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns

However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in users injecting products of unknown origin.

Several experts said the popularity for the experimental drug could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Legal Position and Implementation

Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved drug that must not be marketed or supplied for personal consumption under the British medical regulations.

Several content creators try to sidestep the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and consumer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.

Service Response and Content Elimination

According to TikTok, the platform has removed violative content and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was committed to keeping the service secure and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Operations

Research also found communities with up to 9,000 participants selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with numerous of members, populated with images of slimming results, positive reviews and detailed instructions for mixing or injecting at residence.

After minutes of joining one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a alleged testing documentation. Not one inquired about body mass, health issues or previous experience.

Item Details and Costs

Inside these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use pens usually sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should be used, sellers give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Measures

A representative for the messaging service said it regularly moderated harmful material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is valid, these online products may not contain what they advertise,” said a pharmacy expert, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of an online medical service linked the increase in interest to recent price rises for authorized weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, patients are using social media. But fake injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were produced in was sterile,” she explained.

Her staff has already seen individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”

Producer Position

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational substance not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious health risks”.
